First day of 4th grade, Dessert with Friends, and "stab lab"

Isn't he cute!!
This is Jarrin's first day of the 4th grade. Now a month later, he is doing well in school getting A's in everything except reading....he says he's bored. We are trying to fix this problem. I would love any suggestions.

Dessert with the Ottley's. Thank you so much for visiting! We had a great time catching up with Darren and his wife Tina. I served brownies ( a little doughy ) with cool whip on top. We love our friends! We get so excited when people come visit us that we act like little kids...it's true

"Hello, this is Dustin" Jeff's Best Buy story....

This is Jessica, my classmate. With her permission, I took pics of putting in our very first I.V.'s. She is holding up two fingers which mean that this is my second successful I.V. on her. I was so nervous to poke her that when I got my first I.V. in, I forgot to get a pic of it. I have one more to go before I go out into the "field" and do clinicals. We must have three successful I.V.'s before we can go out in the field. Jessica put in her very first I.V. in me on her first attempt. She is a natural! I was so happy to get her as my partner.

I survived "stab lab" After lab we had our first exam for the semester....I was pretty exhausted when I got home from school! All in all it was a successful day, no one passed out.....yay!

Great I.V.'s Don't know how comfortable I should feel that you only have to do 3 though, should I feel glad that the first isn't on a real patient, or scared that it's only the 4th! LOL!

For the reading, what does he like to read or has read? Alison is in 3rd grade (9 in Nov) and finally this year has just found the love of reading! She is reading Harry Potter right now, I am looking for the next book though. She likes Webkinz and all summer long I would give 20min of computer time for 20 min of reading (they can read more but only get 20 min a day, they can carry it over day to day till it's starts over on Monday morning) It has them both reading well now and after the summer of it they seem to enjoy it more too! Maybe because the reading wasn't just a chore but helped them get something they wanted.

Bethany, I like the idea of rewarding with computer time. He feels like reading is a chore. I think the only time he doesn't complain is when we are reading the scriptures ( divine intervention maybe ?? ) I am looking for a series of books that he is interested in. Goosebumps worked for awhile, pirates of the caribean for younger readers went ok, he even complains about the books he brings home from his library day. I think he's tired...wait I will try to have him read in the morning!!!!!!! You just witnessed an epiphany :) Thank you! As for the I.V.'s, now that I know what it takes to do the skill, I've often wondered about some of the nurses that have put one in me...it hasn't always gone so well :( There is a huge pychological factor to them. The one that Jessica gave me didn't hurt at all. Also, the best way to get good at them is to just go and do them. There really isn't much to it as far as the actual puncture goes and that for a patient is the worst part. I have an understanding of anatomy and and now have an understanding of this skill.....anatomy + skill + experience = successful I.V.'s. It's funny though I was scouting out my partner from the very first day of school...ha ha ha, seriously. If a medic has to put an I.V. in you, that is the least of your worries...:)lol

Jen,

You might try letting Jarrin go to the public library and picking out a few books that interest him. Then let him start reading them for a couple days and decide after that if he really likes them. He is bound to find at least one. That's what my Mom use to do, and I love to read now. It really helped that we didn't always have to read every book, if he does like it he doesn't have to finish.

I am thinking about taking you with me to the doctor from now on. I have to get blood done every other day for like 10 weeks!! They are horrible. They poke me so much!!

oh, and by the way, i don't like reading at all! my inspiration is that if i dont do well then i don't get good grades. i guess that isn't important to jarrin because it doesn't matter to tanner either. haha :) love, Cicely

I think its time to introduce the harry potter books into your household. They are an excellent read and have excellent life lessons to learn when it comes to making good decisions. When I was his age I was reading at a 12th grade level and also found reading boring so you might want to up the interesting/difficulty level on the books. Just some thoughts...

I know Julie was trying to find something Sarah would like reading...as it turned out they got a book even julie thought was scary and I guess sarah has gobbled it up.
